To mark the midlife crisis of turning 50 this year I have decided to have a go at a long distance Triathlon (aka an Ironman). The “Outlaw” in Nottingham on 23 July to be specific. It’s 3.8km of swimming, followed by 112 miles of cycling and then a full marathon, (hopefully) all on the same day!
Back in the autumn, having checked my wife could put up with being an “Ironman widow” for 6 or 7 months I had to address those first-world problems of-“how can I fit in the time to train?”, “what will I look like if I shave my legs?”. Meanwhile one of my oldest friends and his family were going through unimaginably more serious traumas- losing their 15 year old son to suicide.
So I’m going to put all the blood, sweat and blisters to good use by raising sponsorship for Sane- the UK’s leading mental health charity, dedicated to improving the life of anyone affected by mental illness, including family, friends & carers.
If you’d like to help me raise money for this very worthwhile cause and hopefully do a little to help prevent other families going through the trauma of losing a family member to suicide, please visit my justgiving page at: www.justgiving.com/John-O-Grady
