One of the first questions patients ask about invisalign is how long it takes. The honest answer is that treatment length varies depending on the complexity of your case, your compliance with wearing the aligners, and whether refinements are needed. However, understanding what to expect at each stage helps you plan realistically and get the most from your treatment.
Invisalign lite: designed for minor corrections, typically involving minor spacing or mild crowding on one or both arches. Treatment usually takes 3 to 6 months.
Invisalign moderate: for cases with moderate crowding, spacing, or bite correction. Treatment typically takes 6 to 12 months.
Invisalign comprehensive: for more complex cases involving significant crowding, bite issues, or full-arch straightening. Treatment can take 12 to 24 months.
These are guidelines, not guarantees. Your specific timeline will be confirmed at your consultation and reflected in your clincheck treatment simulation.
Consultation and scanning. Your first appointment includes a full clinical assessment and a digital scan using our itero lumina. Your clincheck simulation is designed and refined, and your custom aligners are manufactured. This typically takes two to three weeks.
Weeks 1 to 4: getting started. Your first set of aligners is fitted. Some patients experience mild pressure or slight lisping initially, both of which resolve quickly. Attachments may be bonded to some teeth at this stage. You wear each set for one to two weeks before progressing to the next.
Months 2 to 6: visible progress. Tooth movement becomes noticeable, often most obviously at the front of the mouth. Regular check-in appointments allow us to monitor progress and confirm the treatment is tracking correctly.
Months 6 to 12 (for longer treatments): mid-treatment refinement. For comprehensive cases, a mid-treatment scan may be taken to assess progress and, if needed, refine the remaining aligner sets. This is a normal part of the process and ensures the final result is as accurate as possible.
End of treatment: retainers. Once your final aligner has been worn, retainers are fitted to hold the result. At Berkhamsted Dental, every invisalign treatment package includes a complimentary set of essix retainers. Retainers must be worn as instructed to maintain your result long term.
Invisalign aligners must be worn for a minimum of 22 hours per day to move teeth on schedule. Patients who consistently meet this target tend to complete treatment within or ahead of the projected timeline. Removing aligners for extended periods, beyond meals and oral hygiene, slows progress and can affect the precision of tooth movement.
