One of the most common questions parents ask is when to bring their child to the dentist for the first time. The answer often surprises people: earlier than you might think, and almost certainly earlier than their first tooth.
The NHS advises that children should visit the dentist as soon as their first tooth appears, or from around their first birthday if no teeth have arrived by then. This might seem very early, but the rationale is sound.
The first visit is not primarily about treating problems. It is about establishing familiarity with the dental environment, allowing the dentist to spot any early concerns with tooth eruption or jaw development, and giving parents the guidance they need on cleaning, diet, and fluoride.
Dental anxiety starts early. Research consistently shows that children who attend the dentist from a young age are significantly less likely to develop dental anxiety as they grow older. The dental environment becomes normal, not frightening. Children who only attend when something is wrong are more likely to associate dental visits with pain and fear.
Diet advice at the right stage. Decay in baby teeth is common and preventable. A dentist can advise on appropriate snacking, the timing of moving away from bottle feeding, and the risks associated with frequent sugar exposure at the age when habits are being formed.
Monitoring development. Jaw development, tooth eruption timing, and early crowding issues are best spotted early. Intervention for certain orthodontic concerns is considerably simpler when addressed before the permanent teeth fully erupt.
At Berkhamsted Dental, we make first visits for young patients as relaxed and positive as possible. The appointment is typically brief. The dentist will have a look in the mouth, count any teeth that have arrived, and talk the parent through what to expect next. There is no pressure, no instruments, and no fear. A positive first experience is the goal.
Most children are seen every six months once they have a regular pattern of appointments. This frequency allows the dentist to monitor the development of the permanent dentition and apply preventive treatments such as fissure sealants at the right time.
