For many patients, the idea of dental implant treatment feels complex and perhaps a little daunting. Understanding each stage of the process demystifies it and helps you make a confident, informed decision.
Stage 1: The consultation and assessment
Every implant journey at Berkhamsted Dental begins with a thorough consultation. Your dentist will review your dental and medical history, examine your teeth and gums, and take the necessary diagnostic records.
This includes a CBCT scan using our carestream cs 8200, which provides a precise three-dimensional image of the implant site, showing us the exact bone volume available, the location of nerves and sinus structures, and allowing us to plan the implant placement with precision before any treatment begins.
At the end of your consultation, you will receive a full written treatment plan and a complete fee breakdown.
Stage 2: Preparation (if required)
Some patients need preparatory treatment before an implant can be placed:
Tooth extraction, if the tooth to be replaced is still present. In some cases, an implant can be placed immediately at the time of extraction.
Bone grafting, if there is insufficient bone volume. Graft material is placed at the site and left to integrate for several months before the implant is placed.
Gum disease treatment, if there is any active periodontal disease. Healthy gums are essential before implant placement. Not all patients require preparation. Many can proceed directly to implant placement.
Stage 3: implant placement
Implant placement is carried out under local anaesthetic and is typically more comfortable than patients expect. The titanium implant post is placed into the prepared site in the jawbone. The area is then closed and a healing period begins.
At Berkhamsted Dental, we use Straumann implants, one of the most clinically proven systems available globally. The healing period, during which the implant integrates with the surrounding bone, typically takes 8 to 12 weeks.
Stage 4: The healing phase
During osseointegration, you may be provided with a temporary restoration to maintain appearance and function. Your dentist will monitor healing at a review appointment and confirm when the implant has integrated sufficiently to support the final restoration.
Stage 5: The final crown
Once integration is confirmed, the abutment is attached, and a digital scan is taken to fabricate the permanent crown. The crown is designed to match the colour, shape, and proportions of your surrounding teeth. The final result is a replacement tooth that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.
For a straightforward single implant without preparatory treatment, the full journey from consultation to final crown typically takes 4 to 6 months. Where bone grafting is required, this can extend to 12 months or more. Your dentist will give you a clear timeline at your consultation.
