A dental implant is the closest thing modern dentistry has to a natural tooth. A small titanium post is placed directly into the jawbone, where it integrates with the surrounding bone over time to create a stable, long-lasting foundation. Once healed, a custom-crafted crown is fitted on top, indistinguishable in appearance and function from the teeth around it. The result is a tooth that looks, feels and works exactly as it should, with no movement, no compromise, and no need for adjustment as the years pass.

At Berkhamsted Dental Practice, dental implant treatment is led by Dr Nikhil Patel, a clinician who holds the Diploma in Implant Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and has dedicated much of his career to this discipline. From single-tooth restorations to complex full-arch cases, immediate placements and bone grafting procedures, Nik brings a level of precision and care that patients recognise from the very first consultation. His approach is unhurried, honest and thorough: every patient leaves with a clear understanding of their options, the proposed treatment, and what to expect at every stage.

Implants are one of the most significant investments a patient can make in their long-term oral health, and we treat them as such. Treatment at Berkhamsted Dental is supported by our in-house Carestream CBCT scanner for precise three-dimensional planning, 0% interest-free finance across all implant packages, and the assurance of Straumann implants throughout. If you are considering replacing a missing tooth or seeking an alternative to a denture, we would be delighted to welcome you for a consultation with Dr Nik.

Fees & Pricing

How much does a dental implant cost?

Dental implant treatment is a precise, highly skilled procedure, and the investment reflects the exceptional skills, materials, and technology involved. Fees for dental implants depend on the type of appliance, the complexity of the case, and the extent of treatment required.

Finance Options: We offer 0% interest-free finance on dental implant treatment, allowing you to spread the cost in manageable monthly payments with no added charge. Please ask at your consultation for full details.

Frequently asked questions

Am I suitable for dental implants?

Most adults in good general health are suitable for dental implants, provided they have sufficient bone density in the jaw. If bone has been lost due to tooth extraction or gum disease, bone grafting may be required beforehand. Dr Nikhil will assess this thoroughly during your consultation and CBCT scan.

Can I have implants if I smoke?

Smoking can affect the success of dental implant treatment, as it impairs healing and increases the risk of infection and implant failure. We would always recommend reducing or stopping smoking before and after treatment. Dr Nikhil will discuss the implications with you honestly during your consultation.

Can I have implants if I have diabetes or another medical condition?

Many patients with diabetes and other medical conditions are suitable for dental implants, provided the condition is well managed. Certain medications and health factors can affect healing, so it is important to disclose your full medical history at your consultation. Dr Nikhil will assess your suitability carefully and thoroughly.

Am I too old (or too young) for dental implants?

There is no upper age limit for dental implants, and many patients in their 70s, 80s, and beyond benefit significantly from the treatment. For younger patients, implants are generally not placed until the jawbone has finished developing, typically in the late teens or early twenties. Dr Nikhil will confirm your suitability at consultation.

What is the difference between a dental implant and a bridge or denture?

A dental implant replaces the tooth root as well as the visible crown, providing a stable, permanent foundation that preserves the jawbone and does not rely on adjacent teeth for support. A bridge requires the healthy teeth on either side to be prepared, while a denture is removable and may feel less secure over time. Implants are widely regarded as the gold standard long-term solution.

How long does the full treatment take?

From consultation to final crown fitting, the typical implant journey takes between four and nine months. This includes the healing period after implant placement, typically three to six months, during which the implant fuses with the jawbone. Complex cases requiring bone grafting may take a little longer. Dr Nikhil will give you a clear timeline at your consultation.

Is the implant procedure painful?

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, and most patients find it considerably more comfortable than they anticipated. You may experience some mild soreness or swelling in the days following placement, which is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Dr Nikhil will talk you through what to expect at every stage.

Can dental implants replace multiple teeth?

Yes. Implants can be used to replace a single tooth, several teeth, or an entire arch. Multiple missing teeth can often be restored using just two to four strategically placed implants to support a bridge or full-arch prosthesis, significantly fewer implants than you might expect. Dr Nikhil will recommend the most appropriate solution for your specific situation.

Will my implant look natural?

Yes. The crown is custom-crafted to match the colour, shape, and size of your surrounding teeth, making it virtually indistinguishable from a natural tooth. Most patients find that even they cannot tell the difference. Dr Nikhil takes great care to ensure the aesthetic result is as precise as the clinical one.

How long do dental implants last?

With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last a lifetime. The implant itself, the titanium post, is a long-lasting fixture. The crown on top may eventually require replacement after 15 to 20 years, depending on wear. Long-term success is supported by good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups.

What is the success rate of dental implants?

Dental implants have a success rate of over 95% over ten years, with Straumann implants consistently performing at the higher end of clinical outcomes. Success depends on good patient health, a skilled clinician, and consistent aftercare. Dr Nikhil will give you an honest assessment of your individual prognosis at consultation.

Is dental implant treatment available on finance?

Yes. We offer 0% interest-free finance across all implant treatment packages, allowing you to spread the cost in comfortable monthly payments. Please ask our team for full details at your consultation.

  • Greeted warmly by everyone. Treated respectfully by my dentist with step by step explanations regarding my treatment. Consequently, I was able to feel more relaxed having been reassured that all was going well. Thank you for an excellent outcome.

Very happy with my Invisalign process with Kish. He kept me well informed throughout and always took time to answer all my many queries. The price was reasonable compared to others in the area and it has all been completed within the original time advised. I'm yet to have my composite bonding done but hope to have a transformed smile in the end. Would thoroughly recommend BDP if you're considering Invisalign.

I have just completed the main part of my Invisalign journey followed by composite bonding and could not be happier. Having been told by my previous dentist that it wasn’t worth doing ( due to my age and small change I would achieve) I had a consultation with Dr Kish to start a programme of Invisalign to straighten out my front teeth which had moved over time and now had a very slight overlap. Once complete, I saw Dr Ventsi for bonding to the edges of 6 teeth, which, as a heavy tooth grinder, were chipped and uneven. Both Drs were knowledgeable and lovely to deal with. I could not be happier with the result! A little change has made a huge difference !
