Not all dental implants are the same. The brand, material, and surface technology of the implant have a direct influence on the speed of osseointegration, the long-term stability of the restoration, and the success rate of treatment. Straumann is widely regarded as one of the leading implant systems in the world, and it is the system used at Berkhamsted Dental.
Straumann is a Swiss company founded in 1954, with over 70 years of research, development, and clinical evidence behind its implant products. It is one of the most studied implant systems in dental literature, with thousands of peer-reviewed publications supporting its safety and efficacy across a wide range of clinical situations.
Straumann implants are used in over 100 countries by more than 40,000 dental professionals. For patients, this global adoption means that any dentist who inherits a Straumann case in the future will be familiar with the system and able to access compatible components.
Surface technology. The surface of a Straumann implant is treated using a proprietary process called sla (sand-blasted, large grit, acid-etched), which creates a micro-roughened texture. This texture significantly increases the surface area in contact with bone and accelerates osseointegration. The slactive version achieves documented bone attachment in as little as three to four weeks.
Material options. Straumann offers implants in both titanium and Roxolid, a proprietary alloy of titanium and zirconia that is stronger than conventional titanium. This allows the use of smaller diameter implants in sites with limited bone width, without compromising structural integrity.
Zirconia implants. For patients who prefer a metal-free option, the straumann pure ceramic line offers a tooth-coloured alternative that is biocompatible, aesthetically excellent, and clinically reliable.
We chose Straumann because the evidence for its performance is the strongest available, and because the quality of its components justifies the investment. An implant is a long-term device intended to last decades. Compromising on implant quality to reduce upfront cost is a false economy that can result in failure, revision surgery, and ultimately greater expense.
For our patients, using Straumann means access to a globally compatible system, the best available surface technology, and the confidence that comes from decades of clinical evidence.
